Grow Your Sports Team

Successful coaches know that actually playing the sport is only half the game.

Athletic organizations and teams have the same problems as corporations. Their goals are defined the same way by looking and embracing the same 3 goals, Communication, Teamwork and emotional intelligence. Keep in mind that the San Francisco 49rs met all 3 goals to some degree in the 2024 Superbowl against the Kanas City chiefs. However, Communication broke completely down. That Super Bowl went into overtime. There was an overtime Superbowl rule change. The coaching staff knew of the change; however, they never communicated the change to the players. That cost them the Superbowl. There is another tool available called DISC that can help with communication, behavioral patterns, fear and emotions. DISC stands for the 4 quadrants Dominance, Influential, Steady and Conscientious. This tool can easily be integrated with the analytic tools used in sports today. Let’s take a further look at the analytical loop and how DISC/EIQ can integrate to improve the teams’ 3 goals, communication, teamwork and emotional intelligence. The analytical loop Stage 1: Make sense of the past to predict future trends and behaviors, rather than basing your decision and strategies on guesswork. You make informed choices based on what the data is telling you. Stage 2: four main types of data analysis. 1. Descriptive-what happened 2. Diagnostics-why did it happen 3. Predictive-what is likely to happen in the future 4. Prescriptive what’s the best course of action Stage 3: sports analysis- leverage techniques like machine learning and data mining to analyze player performance and gather other advanced statistics. Sports organizations can then use these data points to adjust their strategies, tweak their rosters and make any coaching changes. Stage 4 Integration of DISC/Emotional Intelligence While DISC, EIQ and Teamwork reports have no intention to replace the analytical loop. However, we feel they could be integrated into the loop to improve and bring the team closer to obtaining the 3 goals of communication, teamwork, emotional intelligence. Let’s take of closer look at the 3 assessments How to use the report: The DISC report is divided into 3 parts introducing the DISC Part 1: Focus on each style Part 2: Understanding yourself Part 3 : Examines and explores adaptability Part 1: focus on each style Understanding Behavioral Styles Understanding Pace and Priority of each style Deep look at the four DISC Styles How to communicate with the DISC Styles Part 2: Understanding yourself General Characteristics Word Sketch- Adapted style describe why you do what you do and what’s important to you in your work environment Word Sketch- Natural Style your natural style DISC styles graph Behavioral Patterns View. Taking assessments like DISC, Core Competency, and emotional intelligence can significantly enhance a coach's ability to build a more effective and cohesive sports team. Each of these assessments provides unique insights that can help coaches understand their players on a deeper level, fostering an environment where individuals can thrive and contribute to the team's success. The DISC assessment focuses on understanding personality types and communication styles. By identifying whether a player is dominant, influential, steady, or conscientious, a coach can tailor their approach to each athlete's unique needs. For example, a dominant player may respond best to direct feedback and challenges, while a steady player may thrive in a supportive and collaborative environment. By recognizing these differences, a coach can create strategies that enhance team dynamics, ensuring that all players feel valued and understood. This personalized approach can lead to improved motivation and performance, as players are more likely to engage when they feel their individual styles are acknowledged. Core competencies assessments delve into the specific skills and strengths players bring to the table. A coach equipped with this knowledge can strategically assign roles that align with each athlete's abilities, maximizing the team's overall effectiveness. For instance, a player with strong analytical skills might excel in a strategic position, while a player with outstanding interpersonal skills could be a natural leader on the field. Understanding these competencies allows the coach to foster a sense of belonging and purpose within the team, as each member recognizes their contributions to the collective goal. Emotional intelligence assessments provide insight into how players manage emotions and interact with one another. A coach who understands the emotional landscape of their team can facilitate better communication and conflict resolution. By promoting emotional awareness and empathy among players, the coach can create a supportive team culture where athletes feel safe to express themselves and support each other. This emotional cohesion is crucial in high-stress situations, such as during competitive games, where teamwork and trust can make all the difference. Incorporating these assessments into coaching strategies not only aids in building a more effective sports team but also fosters personal growth and development among the athletes. As players learn more about themselves and their teammates, they become more adaptable and resilient, qualities that are invaluable both on and off the field. Ultimately, a coach who leverages DISC, core competencies, and emotional intelligence assessments can cultivate a team that is not just skilled but also harmonious, motivated, and ready to face any challenge together.

DISC©, Emotional Intelligence Quotient© (EIQ), and Core Competency Certified Assessments can enhance a sports team's communication abilities by deepen the understanding of each player's personality types, core competencies, and emotional intelligence levels. By recognizing their inherent strengths and fostering personal development, these assessments offer valuable insights that organizations can leverage to cultivate leadership while minimizing instances of anger or unchecked enthusiasm, which can lead to penalties and lost games.
